This movie did not seem to be as depressing as I heard it was, but it also depends on your perspective going into the movie. For me, as a Christian, it was a rather grim look at what might have happened if Jesus had decided that we didn’t deserve His grace, if grace were determined by what we deserve instead of what we need. A woman named Grace is running from the mob and ends up in this little town (Dogville), and its inhabitants decide to take the risk to hide her. It starts out well enough, but the townspeople treat ‘Grace’ worse and worse as the film progresses. It makes a believer stop and think about how he/she treats the gift of grace, whether one appreciatively accepts the gift and tries to pass it along, or whether one mistreats it, or doesn’t accept it at all.
